A series of exhibitions are presented in the Gallery The Manufacturing in the city center of La Rochelle by the contemporary and abstract visual artist Claude Briand-Picard. He focuses on the theme of color and in particular on his and his friend Antoine Perrot’s concept of “ready-made color”, or the use of industrial materials as a source of color. “I am often asked what the purpose of all this is, I just want to expand the possibilities of painting,” confides Claude Briand-Picard.
People often ask me what the point of all this is, I just want to expand the possibilities of painting
After the Fine Arts, Claude Briand-Picard he gradually detaches himself from formal painting, feeling a sort of tiredness, and allows himself to be seduced by the abstract art of the 70s, which leads him to work on his art for several years. He starts with materials such as parchment paper and cardboard, then cotton, fabric and even wood using the iron.
Influence and technique
It is particularly inspired by the Supports/Surfaces movement, which appeared in the 1960s and 1970s, which focuses on the materiality of the work rather than its representation. The goal is to break away from traditional flat canvases. The artists of this movement play with textures to give them relief and incorporate the support as an element in its own right of the work.

The artist uses everyday materials from commerce and industry. In particular plastic bags, magazines or even construction site alarms. Claude Briand-Picard plays with textures, color and its meaning making the work active. “Other artists paint color with tubes of paint, Claude paints color with industrial materials that have their own quality,” underlines Axelle Gaussen, director of the La Manufacture gallery.
The works of the author Dominique Picard are also presented in the exhibition, offering an intimate vision of the artists’ studies and their journey.
