Few French people are ready to move for work

Faced with the housing crisis, 83% of workers believe they might give up a job they were interested in in another region due to difficulties in finding accommodation.

High rents, group visits, difficulty accessing credit… Housing yes in crisis and the French understood it well. Faced with this observation, many people fear having to move and confront the real estate market according to a survey conducted by Opinionway for the job posting site Indeed.

80% of those interviewed believe so difficult to change accommodation currently and a third think they would not be able to find an apartment or house that offers an equivalent or better quality of life than their current one.

It is not surprising, therefore, that 83% of workers believe they may give up a job they are interested in in another region due to housing difficulties.

Two-thirds also prefer a place to live that meets their expectations, even if that means making sacrifices at work. In contrast, a third first look for a job that satisfies them, to the detriment of their living environment.

If we want to solve the employment equation, we will therefore have to “pay maximum attention to the problem of access to housing, everywhere in the territory”, explains the study.

The time gap of the journey

Especially since the geographical proximity between the workplace and home remains a determining criterion in the job search. 35% of the sample cited it as an argument that could encourage them to accept a new job, after a substantial salary, flexible working hours and attractive benefits.

Not all French people spend the same amount of time commuting to work. The majority (two-thirds) spend less than 30 minutes and 28% spend more than half an hour (6% even say they spend more than an hour commuting to work).

But there is a big difference between Île-de-France and other regions. Among residents of Île-de-France, 27% of the “lucky ones” live less than 20 minutes from work, while in other regions at least half of workers reach their office in less than 20 minutes. The average travel time in the region is about 25 minutes, skipping Île-de-France, with an average of 43 minutes.

Therefore, not everyone appreciates an acceptable travel time in the same way. The average ideal travel time for workers in Ile-de-France is 26 minutes, while it varies between 16 and 19 minutes in other metropolitan areas.

The survey was conducted by OpinionWay for Indeed from May 7 to 9, 2024, among 1,165 people representative of the French active population aged 18 and over and an oversample of self-employed people (self-employed, liberal professions, etc.) to reach a total of 230 independent workers.
