Lisbon has won, for the first time, the award for best culinary city in Europe at the World Culinary Awards. The honor was received at a ceremony held in Dubai, and among the competing cities were Barcelona, Copenhagen, Florence, London, Paris and Vienna.
Gastronomy is there one of the key points in choosing a tourist destination and Lisbon has long been recognized for the diversity and quality of its offering. Del typical and local restaurants offering traditional cuisine to excellent restaurants and starred chefs which reinterpret classic flavours, the choice is vast and attracts visitors from every corner of the world.
Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, said: “It is a great pride to see the identity and traditions of Lisbon honored for the first time in this sector and to see how innovation combines with these gastronomic traditions. It is a recognition of the quality of gastronomy that makes Lisbon’s reputation and an award that encourages all the professionals who bring it to life. The local economy is increasingly a distinctive factor for the city of Lisbon and gastronomy contributes significantly to the quality of tourism in Lisbon. »
THE World Culinary Awards the “twin” event of the World Travel Awards, are celebrating their fifth edition this year and are aiming for this promote global culinary culture and encourage food tourism. They highlight industry best practices and innovations and cover several categories, including restaurants, chefs, hotels and other food-related establishments. Winners are chosen by public vote.
