On the occasion of the European Championship and the Portugal-France match this evening, the Portuguese tourist office is launching a promotional campaign.
When you are among the main tourist destinations of the summer, every occasion is good to communicate. Including football, since the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship with, at the head of the gondola, an enticing Portugal-France. And our future opponents, still led by a Cristiano Ronaldo certainly aged (39 years old) but equally influential (he attracts thousands of tourists to his home island with his name alone, Madeira where there is a museum in his name) promptly launch a campaign for this summer holiday.
The Visit Portugal tourist has opted for humor: “Portugal, the Euro favourite not only in football”, capitalizing on Portugal’s supposed status as the favorite. Behind the football rivalries, this campaign is primarily aimed at stimulating the interest of football fans in the country. It also targets the four main markets in terms of nights, customers and revenue in the first quarter of 2024: France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. Many countries whose teams are still in the running for the Euro.
Record revenue in 2023
Will Portugal beat the record for visitors it set in 2023? Last year, the country welcomed 30 million travelers, equivalent to 77 million overnight stays. Revenues, which amounted to 25 billion euros, jumped 37% compared to 2019, the year before Covid, and 18.5% compared to 2022, according to official data from the National Institute of Statistics. With this new campaign, the country intends to make a difference and highlight some national treasures, such as its giant waves of Nazaréits gastronomy, but also wine tourism, which developed in The Douro Valley.
